Jet lag is the application for which melatonin’s evidence base is most robust and consistent:*
- Cochrane Review (Herxheimer & Petrie, 2002): Reviewed 10 randomized placebo-controlled trials and concluded melatonin was “remarkably effective” for preventing or reducing jet lag, with greatest benefit seen after crossing five or more time zones.* The reviewers noted that eastward travel (which requires phase advance — a more difficult circadian shift) showed the strongest benefit from melatonin.*
- Dose comparisons: Research comparing 0.5mg to 5mg found no significant difference in jet lag relief outcomes, though the 5mg dose was associated with faster sleep onset.* Very high doses were not studied for jet lag specifically.*
- Direction matters: Eastward travel requires the clock to advance (wake/sleep earlier); westward requires delay (wake/sleep later). Melatonin’s phase-shifting direction depends on when it’s taken — the appropriate timing differs for east vs west travel.*
